"Gettysburg Golightly" Permanent Populaire

All,

I've established a new 75-mile populaire route based on the "Gettysburg Gallop" permanent.  "Gettysburg  Golightly" follows the same route starting from Mt. Airy, thus omitting the first and last "easy" legs of the 200K route between Rockville and Mt. Airy.  If you're not familiar with the route, it's an out & back.  The route passes through Union Bridge and Taneytown on scenic central Maryland farm roads and features a nice tour of the Gettysburg battlefield.  Terrain is rolling to hilly.

Fwd: Correction to "Weenie One Hundred" Cue Sheet

I made a correction to Saturday's cue sheet, so if you're planning to come to the ride and have already printed it out, please pull up a new copy and print out the first page.  Pages 2 and 3 were not affected.

WEEKEND RIDES, JANUARY 1 & 2, 2011

Dear Friends,

It's been a long time since we've had such a great weather forecast for New Year's Day.  I hope many of you will come out and celebrate with us before things deteriorate next week!  We'll be riding our traditional New Year's "Weenie One Hundred" on Saturday and a beautiful horse-country loop on Sunday.

Please download and print out your own cue sheets and GPS files for the weekend rides by clicking on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of thise page), and you'll find them there!  When you open a pdf file, just click on "Print" to print the cue sheet.  If you're unable to print the cue sheet yourself, let me know and I'll bring a hard copy to the ride start for you.  I won't be bringing extra copies of cue sheets to the ride start unless you email me directly and advise me that you're unable to print out your own.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 1, 2011 -- HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The "WEENIE ONE HUNDRED," starting from Hains Point, Washington, D.C.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 am.**  We have been doing this New Year's Day century almost every January 1 since1999 and will continue with the grand tradition.  The ride begins with ONE lap around Hains Point, then heads down to Mount Vernon on the bike path.  Next, we'll visit Mason Neck State Park on our way to Occoquan for lunch at the Riverside Grill.  After lunch we'll ride to Fountainhead Regional Park and on to historic Clifton, returning to Hains Point via Burke, Annandale, the W&OD and Custis Trails, Theodore Roosevelt Island, and Memorial Bridge.  With all the bike-path miles and little side trips (and unplanned THINGS that inevitably happen on this particular ride), it is quite likely that the dark monster will get the best of us.  Accordingly, all riders should come equipped with lights.  We actually enjoy finishing at dusk or later, as it's such a lovely sight to cross the Potomac River into our fair city and see the monuments all lit up.  If you DO finish before dark and feel cheated, you can do laps around Hains Point until the cows come home.  Slower riders should be familiar with the northern Virginia bike trails; we have attempted to produce an accurate cue sheet, but there are still several parts of the trails where navigation can be tricky.  100 miles, with a couple of optional shortcuts--you can omit the Mason Neck tour and thus cut off 13 miles, and later in the ride you can cut off 4 miles.  You can also rack up a couple of optional bonus miles if you want to visit Fountainhead Regional Park.  Beginning and end of the ride are pretty flat.  There are some honest-to-goodness HILLS between Occoquan and Fairfax Station so don't be surprised when you encounter them.  It was impossible to make up a useful GPS file for this route, sorry.

Directions to the ride start:

HAINS POINT (EAST POTOMAC PARK)

1100 Ohio Drive, S.W., 202-619-7222

Take I-395 north into Washington (over 14th Street bridge) and take the first exit for Potomac Park/Park Police.  Turn left at the T intersection (Buckeye Drive, unmarked), then left into the parking lot near the tennis courts.

************************************************************************

SUNDAY, JANUARY 2, 2011

"LOVELY LOVETTSVILLE LOOP," starting from the VDOT commuter lot in Marshall, Virginia.  **MEETING TIME 7:45 A.M.**  This is a very scenic, fairly hilly tour of most of the classic Fauquier/Loudoun County horse-country towns and villages, including The Plains, Middleburg ("if you're not rich you're not welcome"), Purcellville, Waterford, Taylorstown, Lovettsville, Hillsboro, Round Hill, Airmont, and Rectortown.  All on familiar roads; even the directionally challenged should be able to avoid getting lost on this one!  Lunch in Lovettsville at Andy's Pizza & Subs.  99 miles, with plenty of shorter options.

Directions to the ride start:

MARSHALL VDOT COMMUTER LOT, MARSHALL, VIRGINIA

From DC beltway I-495, take exit 49 onto I-66 west,  In 36 miles, take exit 28 for US17 toward Warrenton/Marshall.  In 0.4 mi. take the Bus.17 ramp right toward Marshall.  In 0.7 mi. turn left on Main Street/VA55 at traffic light.  In ~ 0.2 mi. turn right on Frost St. & follow to parking lot at end of the road.

New Permanent and a Permanent Populaire!!

Dear Friends,

Hope you're all having a holly jolly holiday!

I have two new RUSA permanent routes ready and available to ride 12 months of the year.  The first, "North by Northwest," is a 203 kilometer loop starting in Frederick.  This route begins heading north to Gettysburg over moderate terrain on pleasant country roads.  From there it continues north past Arendtsville and then turns northwest to climb over South Mountain on Buchanan Valley Rd.  This is a particularly beautiful stretch, featuring several miles of riding alongside Conewago Creek, some lushly forested landscape in the Michaux State Forest, and a huge scenic area of high elevation orchard country in the Buchanan Valley.  After descending to Caledonia State Park, riders are rewarded for all the climbing with a delicious lunch at Mama's II in Fayetteville.  Then the westward trek continues into the Cumberland Valley on bucolic farm roads to the westernmost point of the ride, the Enoch Brown Memorial Park.  From there the route turns in a southeasterly direction, featuring several more miles of easy valley riding before reaching the last control in Rouzerville.  After refueling at the Sheetz, the route climbs back over South Mountain on Old Rt. 16 and the ever-lovely Buena Vista Rd, followed by a pleasant downhill run into Thurmont and a gentle return to Frederick on familiar quiet roads.  The two climbs are not particularly steep and the route as a whole is really quite moderate compared to most of my permanents.  It's a beauty, too!  Estimated elevation gain is about 6700 feet.

The second route, "South Mountain X3," is a 135 kilometer permanent populaire route starting in Thurmont.  It follows the "North by Northwest" route as far as Fayetteville, but then turns south and adds an additional climb on PA233 through the Michaux State Forest up to the village of South Mountain, followed by one of our all-time favorite luscious descents on Old Forge Road.  From Rouzerville the routing is the same as that of "North by Northwest" back to Thurmont.  Just think – you still have time to start your quest for the new P-12 award this year!

RUSA membership required, of course.  If you haven't already done so, don't forget to renew before the end of the year :-)

Dear Friends,

Please read the following carefully, noting that we're planning to take a slight shortcut tomorrow.  Also, please download and print out your own cue sheet directly from the DCCenturyRides blog,

http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

Just click on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of the page), and you'll find it there! Sorry I haven't had time to create a GPS file.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2010

"BONNE ROUTE," starting from Dave Berning's house in Potomac, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.**  We first did this ride in August of 2007 as a send off for Randonneurs who were PBP-bound. It's only moderately hilly, definitely the easiest century that we do starting from Dave's house.  Nothing new under the sun on the route, but it's a very nice ride to Purcellville via Seneca, Dickerson, Point of Rocks, Lovettsville, and Hillsboro.  Note that we will most likely take the 14-mile shortcut tomorrow, skipping the leg to Purcellville and having lunch in Leesburg instead.  We return via White's Ferry (I checked and it IS open) (bicycles pay $1.00 to the toll troll).  Full ride including Purcellville is EXACTLY 100 miles.  Our shortened route is 86 miles, but there are two more optional shortcuts you can take that will shorten the ride to 76 miles.

Directions to the ride start:

DAVE BERNING'S HOUSE, 12430 McCrossin Lane, POTOMAC, MD.

From I-495 in VA:  Cross Potomac River and exit to River Road west.  Go about 9 miles and turn right on Travilah Rd.  Go 0.5 mile past 4-way stop sign and turn right onto McCrossin Lane.  Dave's house is 2nd one on right.

From Rockville:  head west on MD28 from I-270 interchange.  In 1/2 mile turn left on Darnestown Rd (two lanes turn left at TL).  In about 2 miles turn left onto Travilah Rd (past Great Seneca Hwy).  In 3 miles, left to remain on Travilah at T.  In 0.4 mile, bear left to remain on Travilah where Turkey Foot goes right.  In 0.4 mile left onto McCrossin Lane.  Dave's house is 2nd one on right, 12430.

From points northwest:  Access Quince Orchard Rd MD124 from either I-270 or MD28. South (or west?) on Quince Orchard, crossing MD28.  In 2.5 miles turn right at T onto Dufief Mill.  Continue straight onto Travilah Rd in 0.2 mile.  In 0.4 mile, bear left to remain on Travilah where Turkey Foot goes right.  In 0.4 mile left onto McCrossin Lane.  Dave's house is 2nd one on right, 12430.

Note regarding Saturday ride

Dear Friends,

Just a note to let you know that there's a boo-boo on the cue sheet for the "Snow Emergency Rando Ride."  The lunch stop, Carmine's, is actually 0.7 mile after the turn onto MD64 rather than 0.2.  I don't have time to fix the cue sheet tonight so if you have printed it out, please make that correction on your copy.  Note that the total distance will be 53.3 miles rather than 52.3.  No charge for the bonus mile :-)

Saturday "Snow Emergency" Ride - December 18, 2010

Dear Friends,

We were hoping to check out a new permanent route tomorrow but......ain't gonna happen.  Instead, we're going to ride our "Snow Emergency Rando Ride," a half century ride starting from Frederick.

The cue sheet and GPS files are posted on the DCCenturyRides blog,
http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/.
Please download your own cue sheet directly from the blog.  Just click on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of the page), and you'll find them there!

Here's the scoop on Saturday's ride:

Saturday, December 18, 2010
"SNOW EMERGENCY RANDO RIDE," starting from the Weis Market parking lot on Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, Maryland. ** MEETING TIME 10:00 a.m.!!!**

This is a variation on a ride we did (at WGR's inspiration) during last winter's snowmageddon period .  Even though it's only 52 miles, we'll climb more than 4500 feet and get a decent workout.  The ride heads due west on US40, a snow emergency route with a wide shoulder.  After climbing over Catoctin and South Mountain, we turn north on Crystal Falls Rd, which we're confident will be clear thanks to the volunteer fire department in Mt. Aetna.  We'll have lunch at Carmine's Italian Restaurant in Smithsburg and then return to Frederick via the same route.  52 miles, 4500+ feet elevation gain.

Directions to the ride start:

WEIS MARKET, 199 Thomas Johnson Drive, FREDERICK, MARYLAND

From D.C. Beltway (I-495), take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.  Continue north on US15 3.7 miles.  Take Exit 16, Motter Ave exit (sign for Frederick Community College).  Turn RIGHT at the traffic light onto Opossumtown Pike.  In a quarter mile turn right onto Thomas Johnson Drive (traffic light), then left into the shopping center.  Park in the lot just north of Roy Rogers.

We have a hunch we'll be using this route more than once this winter.  Hope you'll come out and keep us company!

Saturday Ride -- DC Randonneurs Woodbine 200K RUSA Brevet (no Sunday ride)

Dear Friends,

This Saturday is the DC Randonneurs Woodbine 200K RUSA Brevet, starting from the Woodbine Park & Ride in Woodbine, Maryland at 7:00 a.m.  DC Randonneurs membership is required.

We're not scheduling a ride for Sunday because the weather forecast is totally dreary.

Here's the info on Saturday's brevet, courtesy of RBA Bill Beck:

The cue sheet and GPS files for the Woodbine 200K brevet scheduled for this Saturday, December 11, are now posted at http://dcrand.org/blog/2010/12/07/cue-sheet-and-gps-files-for-december-11-200k-rusa-brevet/. Please note the comment about the GPS routing through New Windsor.

This route travels through farmland and small towns in the piedmont of central Maryland and Pennsylvania, including a stretch through the Gettysburg battlefield. It has plenty of rolling hills, but runs parallel to the mountains, so avoids any major climbs. Total climbing of around 7400 feet is moderate for our brevets, but save some energy for those final 15 miles, which has a few short, steep hills.

Registration starts at 6AM at the Woodbine Park & Ride. There is a Highs store across from the Park & Ride with restrooms. Hope to see you there.

Bill

I second that emotion with regard to the last 15 miles :-)  Looking forward to seeing you on Buffalo Road and/or Watersville.

Sunday Permanent - "Sailing Down to Solomons"

Dear Friends,

We're not scheduling a ride on Saturday but a group of us are planning to ride the "Sailing to Solomons" 206K RUSA Permanent on Sunday, starting from Crofton, Maryland.  If you're interested in joining us you must contact me today so that I'll have time to process all the necessary registration paperwork.  Friday's too late!  All riders must be current RUSA members.

"Sailing Down to Solomons" is a relatively mellow route, suitable for winter riding.  The route heads due south, passing through Prince Frederick on the way down to the pretty nautical town of Solomons, where it takes a nice tour around Solomons Island.  The return route visits Chesapeake Beach, North Beach, Rose Haven, and the lovely Fairhaven.  There are some extended stretches on busy Route 2/4, but the road has wide, smooth shoulders and at least offers an opportunity for speedy travel.  Much of the ride is on quiet, scenic country roads and there are lots of nice water views.

Here's the post-pig-out menu:

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2010

"DOCTOR DISC'S CENTURY OF CENTURIES," starting from McDonald's in Thurmont, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 am**  This is one of our favorite good ol' rides, beginning with the pretty climb up MD550 to Blue Ridge Summit PA.  We'll descend via Mentzer Gap, then visit "Ewetopia" as we continue west through the Cumberland Valley to our lunch stop at Flannery's Tavern in Mercersburg.  After lunch we'll pass by Anderson's Mill and Homestead, ride through the Witherspoon "Red" Covered Bridge, and cross over the Hays double-arch stone bridge over Conococheague Creek.  The scenery is lovely and the terrain moderate for a good part of the day, but keep in mind that the big climb up PenMar awaits us in the afternoon.  We have to get back over South Mountain one way or another, after all.  After a last rest stop in Cascade, we'll ride the length of scenic Foxville-Deerfield Road and then return to Thurmont via the lovely swoopy descent on MD77, but if you're in a hurry to get back or just don't want to climb anymore, you can high-tail it straight down MD550 back to the parking lot.  101 miles, with many short options.

Directions to the ride start:

McDONALD'S, THURMONT, MARYLAND

From DC Beltway, go north on I-270 to Frederick.  Continue North on US15.  In 14.9 miles, take the exit toward MD806/Thurmont (the last of three exits for MD806, the FIRST Thurmont exit).  At end of ramp turn right @SS, then QR @ traffic light onto Catoctin Furnace Rd, then QL at "Weis Entrance."  Park in the first lot on the left, across from McDonald's.

************************************************************

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2010

"TOUR DE TINY TOWN," starting from Springfield Middle School, Williamsport, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  We first discovered Tiny Town (OK, so it's really called "Tiny World") (see http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/11165) on a Tom Burns bicycling weekend out of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania a few years ago.  It's particularly nice to visit the miniature village during the holidays when it's all decorated for Christmas.  SO, it's time for this pretty little ride that starts in Williamsport and heads up to Shippensburg for lunch, with an obligatory stop at Tiny World.  The terrain is typical Cumberland Valley, gently to moderately rolling with lots of bucolic farm scenery.  Only 4300 feet elevation gain.  100 miles with short options of 43, 64, or 80 miles.

Directions to the ride start:

SPRINGFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL, 334 Sunset Avenue, WILLIAMSPORT, MARYLAND

From DC Beltway, take I-270 north approx. 32 miles to Frederick.  Take I-70 West to 81 south.  Take the Williamsport exit #2 onto US11 South.  Turn left onto S. Clinton Drive at the first traffic light.  In 0.8 mile the road turns right and becomes Sunset Avenue.  Springfield Middle School is 0.1 mile on the right.

Downloading and Printing Weekend Rides Cue Sheets

Buddies,

It seems that many of you didn't read the Weekend Rides notice in full, since I've received numerous requests for copies of the ride cue sheets today.

So, again, as of yesterday, you can download and print out your cue sheets and GPS files for the weekend rides directly from the DCCenturyRides blog,
http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/
Just click on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of the page), and you'll find them there!

As I mentioned earlier, I won't be bringing extra copies of the cue sheets to the ride start unless you email me directly and advise me that you're unable to print them out yourself.

Amen :-)

Weekend Rides, November 20 & 21 2010

Dear Friends,

I'm behind schedule so I'll just cut to the chase.

First, the time has come for . . . . .

THE MANY TIMES OVER RECYCLED DREADED WINTER SERMON!!

For the next few months the days will be short. Accordingly, we will be making a concerted effort to finish our weekend rides before the DARK MONSTER catches us. For that reason, I'm asking everyone (that includes Chuck and me) to try to be ON TIME to the ride start so that we can get on the road 15 minutes after the scheduled meeting time. If you show up late and you're one of the "rabbits," please don't expect the group to wait for you while you pump up your tires, put on your cycling shoes, fix the flat tire that you acquired the previous day, etc. You can catch up! We will still attempt to regroup at the rest stops, but we'll try to limit those stops to 15 minutes (20 max). And of course we'll continue to enjoy our leisurely lunches (usually an hour OR SO).  If Chuck and I are late to the ride start we promise a full refund :-)

Inevitably, there will be a time or two when the DARK MONSTER has his wicked way with us, so please come equipped with **LIGHTS** on your bike!!

Next, and please read this carefully:  You can now download the weekend cue sheets and GPS files directly from the DC Century Rides blog at:

http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

I'm not going to be bringing extra hard copies to the start except for those who advise me that they're unable to print out their own.

Finally, here's what's up for this weekend!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2010

"MIRACLE AT MOUNT HOPE," starting from McDonald's in Thurmont, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  The first quarter of the ride is very hilly, beginning with the long climb up MD77 and becoming more interesting with each passing mile, as we climb about 2500 feet in the first 25 miles to Mount Hope, Pennsylvania.  The scenery is fabulous and the descents are thrilling.  After the first rest stop in Fairfield, the terrain moderates quite a bit on the way to lunch at Mamma's in Biglerville.  We'll visit the reputedly haunted Sachs Covered Bridge (circa 1815) during this stretch.  See http://www.nycivilwar.us/sachs.html.  After lunch we'll head for the hills again and ride through some of the beautiful orchard country of northwestern Adams County.  (Yes, we really do love this part of the world, even though we're too late for the apple harvest.)  Other points of interest include the Eisenhower Bridge (circa 1886), the Land of Little Horses, and the Eylers Valley Chapel.  102 miles, with many shorter options.  You can even omit the steepest climb of the day (Iron Springs Rd) and substitute it with the kinder and gentler Jacks Mountain Rd...but then you'll miss Mount Hope!  Total elevation gain for the century 7000-7500 feet.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2010

"SWEET SUGARLOAF CENTURY," starting from Pierce Mill in Washington, D.C.  Meeting time 7:30 a.m.  A close-in ride start with a charming destination, i.e., the top of Sugarloaf Mountain!  After the climb we'll mellow out with lunch at the Hyattstown Deli.  100 miles, with a short option of around 80 miles which, unfortunately, omits the climb du jour, but still offers a decent workout.

Directions to the ride start:

PIERCE MILL, WASHINGTON, D.C.

2375 Tilden Street, N.W.,  Washington, D.C.  20015, 202-426-6908

From DC Beltway, Exit 33, go south on Connecticut Avenue (MD185) into DC.

After going around Chevy Chase Circle and entering DC, go about 2 miles and turn left onto Tilden Street (traffic light)  Go to the bottom of the hill (about ½ mile) and turn RIGHT,  just before the bridge,  then make a quick left into the large parking lot.  Do not park in the little lot next to the mill and the Art Barn.

From downtown DC, take the Rock Creek & Potomac Parkway 2.5 miles north to the intersection with Beach Drive. Bear right on Beach Drive, passing through the tunnel and continuing on past the Zoo. Turn left at the first traffic light onto Tilden Street, cross the bridge over Rock Creek, and immediately turn left into the parking lot.

An alternate route from downtown is to head North on Connecticut Avenue and, a few blocks after passing through Cleveland Park, turn right on Tilden Street (traffic light).   Go to the bottom of the hill (about ½ mile) and turn RIGHT, just before the bridge, then make a quick left into the large parking lot.  Do not park in the little lot next to the mill and the Art Barn.

Saturday Ride, November 6, 2010

Dear friends,

We're scheduling a ride for Saturday only this weekend because we're riding a permanent on Sunday.  If you're interested in joining us on the permanent, please contact me directly for details TODAY to ensure enough time to process all the paperwork.  RUSA membership and lights are required for the permanent.

If you can join us on Saturday's ride, please email me directly and request an electronic copy of the cue sheet (GPS file also available), as I'll only bring hard copies for those who advise me that they're unable to print out their own.

Here's the Saturday offering:

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2010

"SIVANOVA CENTURY," starting from Municipal Parking Lot A in Warrenton, Virginia.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 am!!**   Please note later-than-usual meeting time.   Although the first 25 miles are moderately hilly, the remainder of the ride features gentle terrain.  We'll ride south to Brandy Station in the morning (but definitely not as the crow flies) and on to Batna.  A major highlight will be lunch at Pelham's Pub at the Inn at Kelly's Ford.   For a sneak peak at the menu, see http://www.innatkellysford.com/dining.asp and scroll down to the Pelham's Lunch Pub Menu.  For the Civil War historians among you, we'll be visiting Kelly's Ford after lunch, and your homework assignment is to read all about the battle at http://www.nps.gov/frsp/kelly.htm and all about the "Gallant" John Pelham at http://www.civilwarhome.com/pelhambio.htm.  And, while you're at it, read about the Battle of Brandy Station at http://americancivilwar.com/brandy_station.html.   After lunch we head over to Bristersburg and return to Warrenton via Neavils Mill and Casanova, finally returning to Warrenton by way of the Warrenton Branch Greenway Rail Trail (no climb and no traffic!!).  101 miles, with plenty of shorter options, including a possible 29-mile shortcut after lunch.  Total elevation gain somewhere between 4000 and 4500 feet.

Weekend Rides, October 30-31, 2010

Dear Friends,

The fall colors are peaking, the weekend forecast is for sunny skies, and we have two great rides scheduled for the weekend!  Please note the meeting times -- 8:00 on Saturday and 7:45 on Sunday!    Also, if you plan to join us on one or both days, please email me directly and request an electronic copy of the cue sheet.  I'll only bring copies to the ride start for those who advise me that they're unable to print out their own.

Ghosts, Ghouls & Graveyards

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2010

"GHOSTS, GHOULS AND GRAVEYARDS," starting from Gathland State Park, Burkittsville, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.**  Although we're "celebrating" a day early, we are reviving our classic Halloween ride, "Ghosts, Ghouls & Graveyards" on Saturday.    This exTREEMely scary and challenging ride (~9700 feet elevation gain) visits at least 24 historic cemeteries and graveyards, mostly in Frederick County's beautiful Middletown valley.  You'll also commune with the ghosts of fallen Civil War soldiers as you try to elude the terrifying Snallygaster and Snarly Yow (better ride fast)!  See http://wesclark.com/jw/snallygaster.html and http://wesclark.com/jw/s_yow.html.  There are some incredible views, of course.

We will visit over 20 (maybe 30!) haunted cemeteries and graveyards and encounter ghosts, ghouls, goblins, beasts and demons as we skulk around the Middletown Valley and up and down South Mountain. There may be heavy casualties on this VERY SCARY ride of attrition. **LIGHTS REQUIRED** if you plan to do the ride in its entirety, as there is much to be seen and savored along the way, and we anticipate a climactic, post-twilight mountain-top finale!  There will be a memorial service after the ride to mourn the loss of those who on this day fall victim to the Snallygaster or the Snarly Yow....or simply to the accumulated elevation gain. 102 miles, with more short options than you can shake a broomstick at, but you dare not take any of them lest the Snallygaster have his wicked way with you!  Estimated elevation gain 9700 feet.

Note--there will be an optional brief hike (less than 0.1 mile) on a dirt path to visit a well hidden life-size bronze statue of a dying Civil War soldier, in the center of the area where the most intense fighting took place at Fox's Gap during the battle of South Mountain. If you'd like to accompany us on this little detour you might want to consider bringing covers for your cleats or wearing mountain bike shoes (or better yet walk in your stocking feet), as there are ghosts in every little nook and cranny of Fox's Gap and we want to be quiet so as not to disturb).

Directions to the ride start:

GATHLAND STATE PARK, BURKITTSVILLE, MARYLAND

From I-495, DC Beltway, go North on I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.

West on I-70 west toward Hagerstown, then

Exit 52 onto US340 west toward Charlestown/Leesburg.

In 12 miles take the MD17 exit toward Burkittsville.

Bear right onto MD17 Burkittsville Rd.

In 4 miles turn left onto Main Street in Burkittsville.

In 1 mile turn right onto Arnoldstown Rd at top of climb (War Correspondent's Arch on R), then

QL into parking lot.

"A NEW WAY TO NEW WINDSOR," starting from the C&C Chalet, 14725 Janice Drive, Rockville, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:45 A.M.**  I think it's been 4 or 5 years since we last rode from home to New Windsor.  We've been looking forward to lunch at K&B's, but they're closed on Sunday so we're going to give the New Windsor Inn our business this weekend.  The route has been revised a number of times and chances are that you'll see a new road or two if you come out with us for this version.  We head north on our customary "Rockville escape route" to our first rest stop in Lisbon.  From there we'll continue north through Woodbine and Watersville, eventually wending our way over to Sam's Creek and then to New Windsor for a leisurely lunch stop.  We'll take a different route back, with an afternoon rest stop in Mt. Sunday Morning Coming Down (to Hains Point)

Dear Friends,

Mary Gersema just advised me that the Army 10-Miler is taking place at 8:00 on Sunday morning, starting from the Pentagon.  The race does not go onto Hains Point (thank goodness), but there may be some traffic delays getting to the start.  I think you'll be OK if you use the 14th Street bridge, but Memorial Bridge will be closed.  Be ready for an adventure!  If you can ride your bike to the ride start all the better.

Here's the link to the website to the run and the course map: http://www.armytenmiler.com/

Thanks, Mary!

3 New Rusa Permanents

Dear Friends,

Just a note to advise that I have three new 200K permanents available:

1.  Route # 961:  "If You're Not Rich You're Not Welcome,."  starting in Leesburg VA.   A tri-state loop highlighting classic Virginia horse country (including pretty and pretentious Middleburg VA), historic Shepherdstown WV, and wonderful views of Harpers Ferry.

2.  Route # 962:  "Stan Miller Memorial Ride,"  also starting in Leesburg.  More Virginia horse country, three great food stops, and a crossing of the "Stan Miller Memorial Low Water Bridge."  This ride is dedicated to the memory of a very beloved DC Randonneur.

3.  Route # 965:  "Repast at Rocco's," starting from the Giant in Urbana MD.  The first and last 15 miles or so of this route are extremely hilly, but the guts of it are over fairly gentle terrain.  The route heads north into Pennsylvania to every randonneur's  favorite Adams County pizza joint where we always receive a warm welcome from Rocco himself.

Weekend Rides, October 23 & 24, 2010

Dear Friends,

Another beautiful fall weekend is at our doorstep.  Come out and enjoy the great weather while it lasts!  If you can join us on either or both days, please email me directly and request an electronic copy of the cue sheet(s).  I'll only be bringing hard copies for those who advise me that they're unable to print out their own.  Here's the menu:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2010

"OVER THE HILL WITH DOCTOR DISC," starting from the Weis Market on Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick, Maryland.  MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.

This little gem of a ride was originally designed to celebrate Chuck's 60th birthday.  Even though he's been "over the hill" for a "few" years now, we still love the ride and will continue to offer it at least once a year until we're both so old and feeble that we can no longer get OVER THE HILL.  The ride heads east from Frederick, with an abundance of scenic views, turns, sweet and squirmy little one-lane roads, and exhilarating HILLS.  Lunch at Tony's Cafe & Pizzeria in Taneytown.  Rest stops in Union Bridge and Libertytown.  We'll be doing a slightly modified route this weekend to avoid the bridge out on Lenhart Road.  100 miles, with several short options.  Estimated elevation gain 6500 feet.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2010

"MONUMENT TO MONUMENT," starting from Hains Point, Washington, D.C.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  This route is adapted from a Baltimore Bicycle Club ride of the same name.  It's almost identical to the BBC's route except that theirs starts in Baltimore and turns around at the Washington Monument in DC.  This ride starts from Hains Point, passes the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument in the first mile, and turns around at the Washington Monument in Baltimore!  We'll be traveling on lots of city streets, with many stop signs, traffic lights, some funky neighborhoods, and a couple of bike paths.  Lunch will be at the hoppin' Little Havana in Baltimore.  Some points of interest include the Jefferson Memorial, US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington Monument, National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Lake Artemesia, Baltimore's Washington Monument, American Visionary Arts Museum, Peabody Institute, and Catholic University.  99 miles.  No cued shortcuts but you can turn around at almost any point on the ride and pick up the cues for the return route.

Saturday Ride - Big Beautiful Brevet!

Dear Friends,

Saturday is the DC Randonneurs Cacapon 200K Brevet.  The route, designed by Lynn Kristianson, is absolutely gorgeous and is one of our all-time favorites.  You really don't want to miss it!  The ride starts promptly at 7:00 at the Super 8 in Middletown, Virginia.  If you haven't already pre-registered, on-site registration is $10.00.  DC Randonneurs membership is required.

Here are more juicy details, courtesy of RBA Bill Beck:

The cue sheet and GPS files for the Cacapon 200K ACP brevet scheduled for this Saturday, October 16, are now posted at http://dcrand.org/blog/2010/10/12/cue-sheet-and-gps-files-for-october-16-cacapon-200k-rusa-brevet/. Please park well away from the entrance to the motel. If you missed pre-registration, you can register onsite starting at 6:00AM.

The Cacapon 200K route is a real treat, with plenty of fall colors, a very pleasant 10-mile section along the Cacapon River, and the always-fun climb and descent of Wolf Gap. The fall colors were just getting started during my checkout ride on Saturday, so should be a very pretty mixture of red, yellow, and green this weekend. Thanks to Lynn for designing this relatively recent route that is becoming an October classic for DC Randonneurs.

See ya tomorrow!

Crista

Please ask for cue sheet if you're coming tomorrow!

Hi all,

I forgot to say that if you can join us tomorrow, please email me directly so that I can send you an electronic copy of the cue sheet!!  I will not be bringing extra hard copies unless you advise me that you're unable to print out your own.

Thanks!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2010

"ROLLY ATKINSON MEMORIAL CENTURY," starting from Monocacy Middle School, Frederick, Maryland.  *MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.*  William Shakespeare Smith designed this scenic and yet fairly mellow ride for the Frederick Pedalers last fall, and it includes lots of lovely notes like the Mid Atlantic Soaring Center, the fruit orchards of Adams County, Pennsylvania, the pretty campus of Mount Saint Mary's College, and one of our favorite Adams County pizza joints, Mamma's in Biglerville.  104 miles, with short options of 64 or 87 miles.  Estimated elevation gain 4000-4500 feet.

WEEKEND RIDES, OCTOBER 2 & 3, 2010

Dear Friends,

Autumn has arrived and we're hoping the rain we've had the last couple days will improve our prospects for some pretty fall foliage in the weeks ahead.  In the meantime, let's get out and ride.  Here's what we have planned for Saturday and Sunday.  IF YOU'D LIKE TO JOIN US EITHER DAY, PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY AND REQUEST AN ELECTRONIC COPY OF THE CUE SHEET!!  I will only have hard copies available for those who advise me that they're unable to print out their own.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2010

"ALL ABOUT ABBOTTSTOWN," starting from the McDonald's in Thurmont, Maryland.  **LATE MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.**  Yes, it's true; we've been scheduling this ride a lot lately, so I'm sure everyone is tired of reading the ride description.  Unfortunately, circumstances have been such that I haven't been able to do the ride myself, so we're trying yet again!  George Moore kindly volunteered to lead it for us a couple of weeks ago, and he reported that the new version is a keeper.  It's similar to previous versions in that the terrain is mellow, the scenery pleasant, and it still heads east into Carroll County, MD and north into Adams County, PA, passing through Taneytown, Littlestown, and New Oxford.  The morning rest stop has been moved from the Taneytown Sheetz to the Littlestown Sheetz and the lunch stop has been moved from the "not so improved" Emig's 81 Diner to Brothers Pizza.  102 miles, with a 70-mile short option.

Directions to the ride start:

From DC Beltway, go north on I-270 to Frederick.  Continue North on US15.  In 14.9 miles, take the exit toward MD806/Thurmont (the last of three exits for MD806, the FIRST Thurmont exit).  At end of ramp turn right @SS, then QR @ traffic light onto Catoctin Furnace Rd, then QL at "Weis Entrance."  Park in the first lot on the left, across from McDonald's.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2010

"UNION BRIDGE CENTURY," starting from the C&C Chalet (Chuck Wood's house), 14725 Janice Drive, Rockville, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  Once we get past the obligatory Rockville "escape route," this ride becomes delightfully scenic and rural as we head north through Howard, Carroll and Frederick Counties to Union Bridge.  After our first rest stop in Mt. Airy, one short but nasty molehill on Harrisville Road rewards us with a marvelous long run down the appropriately named Talbot Run Road.  We'll also ride the entire length of Bessie Clemson Road, one of our all-time favorite Frederick County roads, as we wend our way over to historic Union Bridge for a yummy lunch at Original Pizza (NOT to be confused with "OIP").  This is NOT a chain, but rather an authentic Italian mom & pop pizza joint.  Not only is their pizza excellent, but the Maryland crab soup is as good as any we've had in fancy seafood restaurants.  After lunch we'll enjoy a beautiful and bucolic stretch along Sam's Creek before the terrain once again becomes "stimulating."  There is a brief stretch of hard-pack on Roop Road, which riders can avoid if they want to replace it with the gnarliest part of Buffalo Road.  (Roop is prettier AND easier, but it might be a muddy mess after all this rain so we may have to contend with Buffalo on Sunday!)  We'll pass through Woodbine and have a final rest stop in Lisbon before returning to Rockville.  101 miles, with a 56-mile short option that turns around in Mt. Airy.  There are also a few little optional shortcuts before and after lunch.  If you take all of them you'll end up with an 88-mile ride.  Elevation gain 6000-6500 feet.

Here are LOTS OF directions to the ride start:

Frederick Pedalers Century this Saturday Sept 25

Dear Friends,

We don't have a ride scheduled for Sunday, but Bill Shakespeare Smith and his merry band of Fred Peds are putting on their annual no-frills no fee club century this Saturday!  It is always a great event, and this year the route is based on the "E-I-E-I-O" century, with the lunch stop at Rocco's in East Berlin!  Here are all the juicy details, courtesy of the bard:

The club century is set for Saturday, Sept 25; the cue sheets may be found at the link below.  There is just one cue sheet, made up of three pages.  It contains all routes.

Cue Sheet(s) on the web site: http://www.frederickpedalers.org/pages/cues_century_rides.shtml (main info) and http://www.frederickpedalers.org/docs/Century2010.pdf (cue sheet)

Links to the maps on mapmyride.com:
Here are the ride details.

Century—101 Miles:
· Starts on Silo Hill Parkway (Emmitsburg) - adjacent to McDonald's on MD140 at US15
· Leave: Whenever you want, however the "leaders" (see below) will meet at 7:15 am and depart at 7:30.  If you plan on leaving later, print a cue sheet from the web site.
· Terrain: rolling to hilly, 5200 feet of climbing
· Distance: 101 miles
· Visits: Littlestown, Irishtown, East Berlin, Idaville, Aspers, Arendtsville, Emmitsburg

Metric—62 Miles:
· Starts same place
· Leave: We suggest leaving at 9 am; however—print a cue sheet from the web site
· Terrain: rolling, some hills
· Cuts off from the century at mile 38
· Visits: Littlestown, New Oxford, Bonneauville, Emmitsburg

Shortcut # 1—53 Miles:
· Leave: We suggest leaving at 9 am; however—print a cue sheet from the web site
Cuts off from the century at mile 32
Terrain: easier and flatter than the metric
· Goes to Littlestown, Bonneauville and back to Emmitsburg

Shortcut # 2—43 Miles:
· Leave: We suggest leaving at 9 am; however—print a cue sheet from the web site
Cuts off from the century at mile 25
  Only a few hills
· Goes to Littlestown and back to Emmitsburg

We do not have official leaders for ANY of the rides.  Club members are welcome to volunteer for this.  Vicki and I plan on doing the century at a pace of about 14.0-14.5 mph; we welcome anyone who wishes to ride along with us.

What You Get for Your $:
· The cost of these rides is zero—money-back guarantee—if you don't like the ride, your full purchase price will be refunded to you
· We'll provide cue sheets; maps will be on www.mapmyride.com (see above)
· You should bring money for stores

Pace:
This is a ride-at-your-own-pace event.  It is very unlikely that anyone need ride alone, as there will be plenty of riders of various paces taking part.

Rest Stops (Stores):
· Century—at mileage points: 21, 46, 47, 64, 66, 74, 90.
· 62 Miles—at mileage points 22, 38, 45.
· 53 Miles—22, 37.
· 43 Miles—22.

Maps and Cue Sheets:
Cue sheets are available on the club web site at http://www.frederickpedalers.org/pages/cues_century_rides.shtml.  We cannot guarantee that there will be enough cue sheets at the ride start—it is recommended to download the cue sheets from the web site.  Vicki and I will be riding the century on our tandem (departing at 7:30); you are welcome to ride with us.  We'll leave a stack of cue sheets next to our van when we depart.

Cautions, etc.
There will be some traffic to deal with (but not much), mostly in towns.  The century crosses two metal-grate (see-through) bridges - mileages 56 and 60.  If the roads are wet, ride across them at your own risk.  If roads are dry, cross slowly and carefully - do not lean or turn.  One is long enough that, if it is wet, riding across it will almost certainly lead to a fall on the bridge and a trip to the hospital.  The century crosses US route 30 at mile 36 - there is road construction at that intersection.  Be very careful there.  The metric ride at mile 39 has a very bad bump at the left turn (road construction) - take this turn slowly and at a wide right angle - do not cut the turn.  The full century passes two very good restaurants - one in East Berlin (Rocco's), the other in Aspers (Little Italy).  The metric passes by the New Oxford Coffee Company on the traffic circle turn - we very much recommend this place.  Remember that the turns are NOT MARKED.
Read your cue sheet to avoid becoming lost.

Thanks go to:
The Brain Trust - a "pirate" Frederick Pedalers sub-(dis)organization, answerable to no one, made up of Mike Wali, Barry McMahon, Dave Sweeney, Vicki and Bill Smith.  These folks have made the century happen, from route design and checkout to ideas and brainstorming.  Special thanks go to Barry McMahon for suggesting the route (adapted from a Crista Borras/DC Randonneurs ride) and doing the initial driving of the century route, and Mike Wali, who rode all four route options on checkout rides.

On Sunday, we'll be leading a "gentle" ride.  **If you can join us on Sunday, please email me off list and request a copy of the cue sheet (and GPS file if you would like one).  I'll only be bringing extra cue sheets for those who are unable to print out their own.**

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2010

A new and improved "ALL ABOUT ABBOTTSTOWN," starting from the McDonald's in Thurmont, Maryland.  **LATE MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.**  This ride has been through several incarnations over the years and now it's been tweaked yet again.  The new route is similar to other versions in that the terrain is mellow, the scenery pleasant, and it still heads east into Carroll County, MD and north into Adams County, PA, passing through Taneytown, Littlestown, and New Oxford.  This version moves the morning rest stop from the Taneytown Sheetz to the Littlestown Sheetz and avoids a couple of bad intersections in Abbottstown.  Also, the lunch stop has been moved from the "not so improved" Emig's 81 Diner to Brothers Pizza, which should make for a better dining experience.  102 miles, with a 70-mile short option.

Directions to the ride start:

McDONALD'S, THURMONT, MARYLAND

From DC Beltway, go north on I-270 to Frederick.  Continue North on US15.  In 14.9 miles, take the exit toward MD806/Thurmont (the last of three exits for MD806, the FIRST Thurmont exit).  At end of ramp turn right @SS, then QR @ traffic light onto Catoctin Furnace Rd, then QL at "Weis Entrance."  Park in the first lot on the left, across from McDonald's.

Subject: [Dcrand] Saturday Ride - Gettsyburg Glory

Dear all-

While Chuck and Crista are off riding permanents this weekend, I'll be a leading a Saturday ride starting in Mt. Airy for those who are interested in attending the Stan Miller Life Celebration afterward in Gaithersburg.  Please email me at jemag@verizon.net and let me know if you are coming so I can send you the cue sheet.

Here are the details:

"GETTYSBURG GLORY," starting from Watkins Park in Mt. Airy, Maryland.
MEETING TIME 7:30 A.M.  This ride was adapted from a classic Tom Burns
ride led back in Y2K.  The terrain is very hilly at the beginning and
end and fairly mellow in the middle.  The ride includes a very nice tour
of the Gettysburg battlefields.  There are two short unpaved stretches
near the end of the ride, but I have cued a paved option for the
squeamish.  Lunch at Dino's in Gettysburg.  103 miles, with a 57-mile
short option that turns around at the first rest stop in Taneytown.

Directions to the ride start:
WATKINS PARK, 615 CENTER STREET, MT. AIRY, MARYLAND From DC Beltway,
take I-270 north to exit 16, Father Hurley Blvd (MD27).
Follow MD27 north for 8 miles to Damascus, then BL tro MD27 north.
Pass under I-70 in another 6-1/2 mi. (you are now in Mt. Airy).
In 1.7 mi., after passing thru 3 traffic lights, turn L into Watkins
Park, followed by a quick right.
Head past tennis courts to next small parking lot on L (next to small
restroom building).

Jeff
