Weekend Rides, December 31, 2011 and January 1, 2012

Dear Friends,

We're going to take advantage of the excellent year's end weather forecast and ride both Saturday and Sunday.  We'd love to see you out there to help us ring in the New Year!

Please download and print out your own cue sheets, GPS files, and overview maps for the weekend rides directly from the DCCenturyRides blog, http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

Just click on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of the page), and you'll find them there!  If you're unable to print the cue sheet yourself, let me know and I'll bring a hard copy to the ride start for you.  I won't be bringing extra copies of cue sheets to the ride start unless you email me directly and advise me that you're unable to print out your own.

Here's the schedule:

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2011

"HALF PONE POINT," starting from T.C. Martin Elementary School, Bryantown, Maryland.  **NOTE LATE MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.**  A fairly gentle ride, mostly in St. Mary's County, featuring quiet roads, Amish farms, Greenwell State Park, and views of "Cuckold Creek."  Lunch at the lovely Front Porch Restaurant in Leonardtown.  See :  http://www.thefrontporchsomd.com/.   103 miles with plenty of short options.  Estimated elevation gain 3500 feet.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/869652

Directions to the ride start:

T. C. MARTIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BRYANTOWN, MARYLAND

6315 Olivers Shop Rd, Bryantown, Maryland

From DC Beltway, south on MD5 Branch Avenue, toward Waldorf (Exit 7A)  In 12.2 miles turn left onto MD5 (traffic light) (just after entering Charles County, sign to Lexington Park/Leonardtown).  In 3.2 miles turn left onto Leonardtown Rd to remain on MD5 (traffic light, Bus. 5 goes right).  In 4.9 miles turn right onto Olivers Shop Rd MD232 (blinking traffic light).  In 1.1 miles turn right into school parking lot.

******************************************************

SUNDAY, JANUARY 1, 2012 -- HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The "WEENIE ONE HUNDRED," starting from Hains Point, Washington, D.C.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 am.**  We have been doing this New Year's Day century almost every January 1 since1999 and will continue with the grand tradition.  The ride begins with one lap around Hains Point, then heads down to Mount Vernon on the bike trail.  Next, we'll visit Mason Neck State Park on our way to Occoquan for lunch at the Riverside Grill.  After lunch we'll ride to Fountainhead Regional Park and on to historic Clifton, returning to Hains Point via Burke, Annandale, the W&OD and Custis Trails, Theodore Roosevelt Island, and Memorial Bridge.  With all the bike-path miles and little side trips (and unplanned THINGS that inevitably happen on this particular ride), it's quite possible that the dark monster will have his wicked way with us.  Accordingly, all riders should come equipped with lights.  We actually enjoy finishing at dusk or later, as it's such a lovely sight to cross the Potomac River into our fair city and see the monuments all lit up.  If you DO finish before dark and feel cheated, you can do laps around Hains Point until the cows come home.

All riders should be familiar with the Mount Vernon, W&OD and Custis bike trails.  It's very difficult to keep a group together on the trails, and no one will be "sweeping" the route.  While I've tried to produce an accurate cue sheet, there are still several parts of the trails where navigation can be tricky.

100 miles, with a couple of optional shortcuts--you can omit the Mason Neck tour and thus cut off 13 miles, and later in the ride you can cut off 4 miles.  You can also rack up a couple of optional bonus miles if you want to visit Fountainhead Regional Park.  Please don't let the name of this ride fool you into expecting a flat ride!  While the beginning and ending miles of the ride are on fairly flat bike trails, the core of the ride features some honest-to-goodness HILLS, particularly between Occoquan and Fairfax Station, so don't be surprised when you encounter them.  I estimate at least 5500 feet of elevation gain for the century.  Here's the link to the interactive RWGPS map and elevation profile:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/858723.  I haven't attempted to generate a Garmin GPS file because of the heavy utilization of bike paths on this route.

Directions to the ride start:

HAINS POINT (EAST POTOMAC PARK)

1100 Ohio Drive, S.W., 202-619-7222

Take I-395 north into Washington (over 14th Street bridge) and take the first exit for Potomac Park/Park Police.  Turn left onto Buckeye Drive at the T intersection, then left into the parking lot near the tennis courts.

Happy New Year to All!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2011

"BONNE ROUTE," starting from Dave Berning's house, 12430 McCrossin Lane, Potomac, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:45 a.m.**  We first did this ride in August of 2007 as a send off for Randonneurs who were PBP-bound. It's only moderately hilly (probably ~ 5000 feet elevation gain), definitely the easiest century that we do starting from Dave's house.  Nothing new under the sun on the route, but it's a very nice ride to Purcellville via Seneca, Dickerson, Point of Rocks, Lovettsville, and Hillsboro.  We return via White's Ferry (bicycles now pay $2.00 to the toll troll).  We'll most likely have lunch in Purcellville but may opt for Hillsboro if we just can't wait.  98 miles with several optional shortcuts.  If you take all of them you'll have 76 miles total, but will miss Hillsboro and Purcellville.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/862930

Directions to the ride start:

DAVE BERNING'S HOUSE, 12430 McCrossin Lane, POTOMAC, MD.

From I-495 in VA:  Cross Potomac River and exit to River Road west.  Go about 9 miles and turn right on Travilah Rd.  Go 0.5 mile past 4-way stop sign and turn right onto McCrossin Lane.  Dave's house is 2nd one on right.

From Rockville:  head west on MD28 from I-270 interchange.  In 1/2 mile turn left on Darnestown Rd (two lanes turn left at TL).  In about 2 miles turn left onto Travilah Rd (past Great Seneca Hwy).  In 3 miles, left to remain on Travilah at T.  In 0.4 mile, bear left to remain on Travilah where Turkey Foot goes right.  In 0.4 mile left onto McCrossin Lane.  Dave's house is 2nd one on right, 12430.

From points northwest:  Access Quince Orchard Rd MD124 from either I-270 or MD28. South (or west?) on Quince Orchard, crossing MD28.  In 2.5 miles turn right at T onto Dufief Mill.  Continue straight onto Travilah Rd in 0.2 mile.  In 0.4 mile, bear left to remain on Travilah where Turkey Foot goes right.  In 0.4 mile left onto McCrossin Lane.  Dave's house is 2nd one on right, 12430.

Tour de Tiny Town

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2011

"TOUR DE TINY TOWN," starting from Springfield Middle School, Williamsport, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  We first discovered Tiny Town (OK, so it's really called "Tiny World") (see http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/11165) on a Tom Burns bicycling weekend out of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania several years ago.  It's particularly nice to visit the miniature village during the holidays when it's all decorated for Christmas.  SO, it's time for this pretty little ride that starts in Williamsport and heads up to Shippensburg for lunch, with an obligatory stop at Tiny World.  The terrain is typical Cumberland Valley, gently to moderately rolling with lots of bucolic farm scenery.  Estimated elevation gain only 4100 feet.  99 miles with short options of 43, 64, or 80 miles.  Here's the link to the interactive RWGPS map and elevation profile:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/853213

Directions to the ride start:

SPRINGFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL, 334 Sunset Avenue, WILLIAMSPORT, MARYLAND

From DC Beltway, take I-270 north approx. 32 miles to Frederick.  Take I-70 West to 81 south.  Take the Williamsport exit #2 onto US11 South.  Turn left onto S. Clifton Drive at the first traffic light.  In 0.8 mile the road turns right and becomes Sunset Avenue.  Springfield Middle School is 0.1 mile on the right.

Lovely Lovettsville Loop

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2011

"LOVELY LOVETTSVILLE LOOP," starting from the commuter lot in Marshall, Virginia.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 A.M.**  This is a very scenic, fairly hilly tour of most of the classic Fauquier/Loudoun County horse-country towns and villages, including The Plains, Middleburg ("if you're not rich you're not welcome"), Purcellville, Waterford, Taylorstown, Lovettsville, Hillsboro, Round Hill, Airmont, and Rectortown.  All on familiar roads; even the directionally challenged should be able to avoid getting lost on this one!  Lunch in Lovettsville at Andy's Pizza & Subs.  99 miles, with PLENTY of shorter options.  Estimated elevation gain 6,200 feet.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/853601

Directions to the ride start:

MARSHALL COMMUTER LOT, MARSHALL, VIRGINIA

From DC beltway I-495, take exit 49 onto I-66 west,  In 36 miles, take exit 28 for US17 toward Warrenton/Marshall.  In 0.4 mi. take the Bus.17 ramp right toward Marshall.  In 0.7 mi. turn left on Main Street/VA55 at traffic light.  In ~ 0.2 mi. turn right on Frost St. & follow to parking lot at end of the road.

"E-I-E-I-O," starting from Old MacDonald's Farm in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  Park and meet on Silo Hill Parkway.

Old MacDonald went for a bike ride, and on that ride he set out from his farm in *Emmitsburg,* danced a jig in *Irishtown,* dined like a king at Rocco's in *East Berlin,* picked a few apples in *Idaville,* and crossed the railroad tracks in *Orrtanna.*  See if you can find at least one of each of Old MacDonald's farm animals on this ride!  The first half of the ride is fairly mellow.  The second half is kinda hilly and very scenic.  Lunch at our most beloved Adams County pizza joint, Rocco's!  100 miles, with an 80-mile short option that includes the lunch stop and still eliminates all the afternoon hills.  Estimated elevation gain 5,300 feet.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:

"COBB ISLAND CENTURY," starting from the College of Southern Maryland, La Plata, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 am.**  A gentle ride, with some flat stretches and a few hills.  Points of interest include Port Tobacco, Chapel Point, Popes Creek, and a nice tour around Cobb Island.  Lunch at the Scuttlebutt Restaurant on the island.  101 miles, with MANY shorter options.  Estimated elevation gain 3200 feet.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/838135

Directions to the ride start:

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND, 8730 MITCHELL ROAD, LA PLATA, MARYLAND

From DC Beltway, exit 7A, Route 5 South (Branch Ave.) towards Waldorf.  In 12.7 miles merge onto US301 South/Crain Hwy/Blue Star Memorial Hwy.  In 8.7 miles turn right onto Mitchell Rd (traffic light, 1st right after Turkey Hill Rd).  In 1.6 mile turn right on North Campus Drive into the college.  Immediately turn R into 1st parking lot.

"SIVANOVA CENTURY," starting from Municipal Parking Lot A in Warrenton, Virginia.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 am**   Although the first 25 miles are moderately hilly, the remainder of the ride features somewhat "kinder and gentler" terrain.  We'll ride south to Brandy Station in the morning (but definitely not as the crow flies) and on to Batna.  A major highlight will be lunch at Pelham's Pub at the Inn at Kelly's Ford.   For a sneak peak at the menu, see http://www.innatkellysford.com/dining.asp and scroll down to the Pelham's Lunch Pub Menu.  For the Civil War historians among you, we'll be visiting Kelly's Ford after lunch, and your homework assignment is to read all about the battle at http://www.nps.gov/frsp/kelly.htm and all about the "Gallant" John Pelham at http://www.civilwarhome.com/pelhambio.htm.  And, while you're at it, you can read about the Battle of Brandy Station at http://americancivilwar.com/brandy_station.html.   After lunch we head over to Bristersburg and return to Warrenton via Neavils Mill and Casanova, finally returning to Warrenton by way of the Warrenton Branch Greenway Rail Trail (no climb and no traffic!!).  101 miles, with plenty of shorter options, including a possible 29-mile shortcut after lunch.  Estimated elevation gain 4400 feet.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/827912

Directions to the ride start:

From DC Beltway, take I-66 west 21 miles to Exit 43A (Gainesville/Warrenton).  South on US29 for 11.5 miles where road forks near Warrenton.  Bear right at split, taking Warrenton exit (Bus. US29/15).   In about 0.8 miles turn left on Blackwell Rd (Sheetz on right at this intersection).  Continue straight on Alexandria Pike and at the top of the hill bear right onto Waterloo Street, then make a quick left onto Ashby Street.  Cross Lee St. and continue straight into Municipal Lot A.

*************************************************************************

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2011

"DAM GOOD RIDE TO GLEN ROCK,"  starting from New Midway Elementary School in Keymar, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30am.**  This ride heads in a northeasterly direction with a morning rest stop in Littlestown, PA., and continues past the Long Arm Reservoir and then along the very scenic Impounding Dam Road past the Sheppard Myers Dam.   We'll continue on to the historic railroad village of Glen Rock, where we'll have a relaxed and yummy lunch at Mignano's.  After lunch we'll tackle a few of York County's "interesting" hills as we head back into Carroll County MD.  Afternoon delights include Deep Run, a lovely cruise down Silver Run Valley, and maybe a CAMEL!   The route includes two unpaved hard-pack surface roads.  Paved options are indicated on the cue sheet and will yield a couple of bonus miles.  101 miles, with 58 and 77-mile short options.  Here's the link to the RWGPS interactive map and elevation profile:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/828754

Here are the directions to the ride start:

NEW MIDWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 12226 Woodsboro Pike, Keymar, Maryland  21757

From D.C. Beltway, take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.  Continue north on US15 about 2-1/2 miles then exit onto MD26 East/Liberty Rd. toward Libertytown/MD194/Walkersville.  In 2.2 miles bear left onto Woodsboro Pike MD194 North.  In 9.5 miles turn L into the school, JUST past intersection with Detour Rd.

No restroom facilities at ride start.  You'll pass Starbucks/Panera/Sheetz, etc. on the way out, so avail yourselves of those opportunities!

Gobble gobble,

Sunday Ride, November 20, 2011

Dear Friends,

Before I go into the juicy details about Sunday's ride, here, by popular demand, is YE OLDE WINTER SERMON!!

For the next few months the days will be short. Accordingly, we will be making a concerted effort to finish our weekend rides before the dark monster catches us. For that reason, I'm asking everyone (that includes Chuck and me) to try to be on time to the ride starts so that we can get on the road 15 minutes after the scheduled meeting time. If you show up late and you're one of the "rabbits," please don't expect the group to wait for you while you pump up your tires, put on your cycling shoes, fix the flat tire that you acquired on the previous ride, etc. You can catch up! We will still attempt to regroup at the rest stops but will try to limit those stops to 15 minutes (20 max). And of course we'll continue to enjoy our leisurely lunches (usually an hour or so). If Chuck and I are late to the ride start we promise a full refund :-

Inevitably, there will be a time or two when the dark monster has his wicked way with us, so please come equipped with **LIGHTS** on your bike!

As always, please download and print out your own cue sheets and GPS files for the weekend rides directly from the DCCenturyRides blog, http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

Just click on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of the page), and you'll find them there!  When you open a PDF file, just click on "File" and then "Print (PDF)" to print the cue sheet.  If you're unable to print the cue sheet yourself, let me know and I'll bring a hard copy to the ride start for you.  I won't be bringing extra copies of cue sheets to the ride start unless you email me directly and advise me that you're unable to print out your own.

So here's what we're doing on Sunday.  Hope you can join us!

"ALL ABOUT ABBOTTSTOWN," starting from McDonald's, 13769 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.**  A "relatively" mellow and yet scenic trek through pleasant central Maryland and south central Pennsylvania farmland.  The route passes through Detour, Middleburg, Littlestown and New Oxford on the way to lunch at Brothers Pizza in Abbottstown.  The return route visits Taneytown and Keysville.  102 miles, with a 70-mile short option.  Estimated elevation gain 4700 feet.  Here's a link to the interactive RWGPS map:

Weekend Rides November 5 and 6, 2011

Dear Friends,

It looks like the stars have aligned such that we can ride both Saturday and Sunday this weekend!  Here's what's on tap:

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2011
THREE BABES IN THE WOODS 150K RUSA POPULAIRE

Our plans turned south last Sunday after Emmitsburg received a foot of snow, so we're going to give this ride another try this Saturday.  Here's the recycled and warmed up scoop.  "Three Babes in the Woods" is a new 150K (94-mile) RUSA Populaire.  Starting from Emmitsburg MD, the route heads north through Adams County PA high orchard country, climbs over South Mountain on Whiskey Springs Road, and then breezes into Mount Holly Springs for a nice lunch at Sicilia Pizzeria and Subs. The return route climbs back over South Mountain on PA233 (ay-yay-yay) and then over Piney Mountain on Bendersville Road, swoops down into Arendtsville on PA234, and visits Cashtown and Orrtanna on the way back to Emmitsburg. Highlights (in addition to the 6700 feet of elevation gain) include the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Center, the Land of Little Horses, "three babes in the woods," and Pine Grove Furnace. The scenery is great and, in the words of Dr. DeMento, "there's lots of downhill."

If you'd like to join us on this Populaire, first you MUST be a RUSA member.  Additionally, you'll need to contact me asap (no later than THURSDAY afternoon--not Thursday night ) to request registration and waiver forms.  I'll email those forms to you, and then you'll need to print them out, complete the registration form, sign and date the waiver, and email the executed forms back to me by no later than Friday morning, not Friday night. (An unsigned waiver doesn't cut it, sorry.)  NEXT, I'll email to you your cue sheet and control card and you'll need to print those out for yourselves.

*************************************************************

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2011

"GET TO THE POINT," starting from T.C. Martin Elementary School, Bryantown, Maryland.  Remember to turn your clocks back an hour when you retire Saturday night:  **MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m Eastern Standard Time.**  A pretty ride through Charles and St. Mary's Counties to Colton's Point and the Potomac River Museum at St. Clement's Island.  We'll have lunch at the quaint but charming, off-the-beaten-path Morris Point Restaurant (see http://www.morris-point.com/), where once upon a time the owner served us lunch in her pajamas and mink coat!  We'll pass several picturesque Amish farms in the afternoon.  Terrain is flat to gently rolling.  Well, OK, there are a few of hills; but total elevation gain is less than 3,000 feet.  101 miles, with several short options.  Here's the link to the interactive RWGPS map:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/644633

Please download and print out your own cue sheet and GPS file for Sunday's ride directly from the DCCenturyRides blog, http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

If you're unable to print the cue sheet yourself, let me know and I'll bring a hard copy to the ride start for you.  I won't be bringing extra copies of cue sheets to the ride start unless you email me directly and advise me that you're unable to print out your own.

RUSA 150K Populaire on Sunday

Dear Friends,

Where has October gone?  I need to keep my P12 quest alive, so we're riding a Populaire on Sunday.  Since we're only riding one day this weekend (Saturday looks cold, weepy, and maybe even white), I also need a good, long, hilly ride, and so we're going to ride my new 150K (94-mile) "Three Babes in the Woods" RUSA populaire. If you'd like to join us on this Populaire, first you MUST be a RUSA member.  Additionally, you'll need to contact me asap (no later than Friday afternoon--not Friday night ) to request registration and waiver forms.  I'll email those forms to you, and then you'll need to print them out, complete the registration form, sign and date the waiver, and email the executed forms back to me by no later than Saturday morning, not Saturday night . (An unsigned waiver doesn't cut it, sorry.)  NEXT, I'll email to you your cue sheet and control card and you'll need to print those out for yourselves.

Hope to see you Sunday,

Crista

Sunday Ride, September 4, 2011

Dear Friends,

We're hoping that we can eke out a somewhat dry ride on Sunday, and here's the plan:

"A TASTE OF FLECHE," starting from McDonald's in Thurmont, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 8:00 am.**  The ride begins with the long gradual climb up MD77, followed by a wonderful descent into the bucolic Cumberland Valley, where we'll wander around for the rest of the morning, gradually heading northwest to Marion, Pa.  From there we turn east, following Team Carnivore's fleche route to Gettysburg and stopping for lunch at Mamma's in Fayetteville before the honestly forgiving climb over South Mountain.  Afternoon rest stop at the wonderful Ragged Edge Coffee House in Gettysburg.  We'll visit the Gettysburg battlefield, the  "haunted" Sachs Covered Bridge, and the Mid Atlantic Soaring Center on the way back.  100 miles, with an optional 11-mile shortcut before lunch.  Estimated elevation gain 5880 feet.

Please download and print out your own cue sheet and GPS file for Sunday's ride directly from the DCCenturyRides blog, http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

Just click on "Cue Sheets" (on the left side of the page), and you'll find them there!  When you open a pdf file, just click on "Print" to print the cue sheet.  If you're unable to print the cue sheet yourself, let me know and I'll bring a hard copy to the ride start for you.  I won't be bringing extra copies of cue sheets to the ride start unless you email me directly and advise me that you're unable to print out your own.

There is still a possibility that we'll schedule a ride for Monday, but won't make that determination for at least another day as we watch the weather forecast.  If we do, we'll send out another post at that time.

Missing Cue on PBP Cue Sheet

Dear Friends,

If you downloaded the cue sheet for "PBP," please note that there was a missing cue.  The corrected cues have been posted on the DCCenturyRides blog, http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/.

Here's hoping our friends at the real PBP don't encounter any missing arrows!

"GET TO THE POINT," starting from T.C. Change in meeting location for Saturday's ride

Dear Friends,

Rather than meeting at McDonald's, we'll meet in the little parking lot across the street from McD's, JUST west of the BB&T Bank.  There may be a sign for Milford Mill Rd (or maybe not), but just turn right as soon as you pass the BB&T.  There's a small building with restrooms in the park there, but they may be locked.  Restrooms available at McDonald's, of course.

Saturday Ride (& maybe Sunday)

Dear Friends,

We're really excited for all our randonneur friends who are over in France now, and in solidarity with them we're going to ride PBP, too!  For those of you who for whatever reason weren't able to swing the epic voyage this year, I hope you can join us on our own adventure.

Please download and print out your own cue sheet and GPS file for the Saturday's ride directly from the DCCenturyRides blog, http://dccenturyrides.blogspot.com/

SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 2011

PBP (Poolesville – Boonsboro – Poolesville), starting from McDonald's in Poolesville, Maryland.  **MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.**  A new ride designed just for this special occasion, albeit mostly on familiar Frederick and Washington County roads.  It's kind of a drunken sailor route, so there are plenty of places where you can shortcut, but I haven't had time to cue any of them.  Here'a s link to an interactive Ridewithgps map:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/644527

On the way to Boonsboro, we'll be on two of our favorite roads that include short stretches of unpaved surface, but don't let that discourage you because they're nice hardpack and really beautiful.  Also, in keeping with the PBP theme, if you're an old-timer you'll recognize parts of the route from Dave Berning's original 200K brevet route from 1991!  Lunch at the Icing Bakery & CafĂ© in Boonsboro.  100 miles, estimated elevation gain 6600 feet.

****************************************************************************

Sunday is still up in the air, depending on the weather.  If we do decide to ride on Sunday, I'll send out an additional notice, I hope by Friday night.  If we schedule ride it will be something easy and slow-paced,

Saturday ride - "North by Northwest" 203K Permanent

Dear Friends,

We can only ride one day this weekend, and we've decided on Saturday.  We'll be doing the "North by Northwest" 203K RUSA Permanent, starting from the Roy Rogers on Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, Maryland.  A ride as intriguing and thrilling as the movie, it starts out on a tame note, heading north to Gettysburg.  Suspense builds as it continues north into the Michaux State Forest.  Riders will relax some during the following mellow interlude through the Cumberland Valley only to find themselves again on the edge of their seats as they approach with some trepidation the likes of South Mountain on the return route.  That's all I'm telling.

RUSA rules require that all Permanent riders be RUSA members and officially registered for the permanent. If you'd like to join us you'll need to contact me as soon as possible, preferably by 8:00 p.m. tonight, to request registration and release forms.  I'll then email those forms to you and you'll need to print them out, complete them, and email the registration form and SIGNED release form back to me by Friday morning.  Then I'll email the control card and cue sheet to you and you'll need to print those out for yourselves.  Please be sure that you've read and understand all the information regarding riding a RUSA permanent, available on the Permanents page of the RUSA website, www.rusa.org, before registering for the permanent.  Note:  If you haven't registered for the permanent, please do not show up at the ride start to "come along for the ride," as it's against RUSA rules for anyone who is not officially registered to ride with those riding the permanent.

Sorry for the very short notice, but we were waiting to see what the weather was going to do.  We'd love for you to join us!
