WEEKEND RIDES -- INCLUDING FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, APRIL 2, 3 AND 4, 2010!

Dear Friends,

What a wonderful coinkydink that we can ride three days in a row on what promises to be a spectacularly gorgeous weekend!  We'll start out with one of our absolute favorite rides, and I hope you can join us at least one day this weekend.  If you plan to come out, please email me and I'll send you an electronic copy of the cue sheet(s), as I will not be bringing hard copies to the ride start unless you're unable to print out your own.

"THE HORNETS NEST HUNDRED," starting from Monocacy Middle School, Frederick, Maryland.   MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.  This ride was originally designed as the second in a series of check-out rides for the epic "Perimeter of Frederick County," and it remains one of our favorites.  The first half of the ride includes a few MAJOR climbs (and LOTS of not-so-major ones), stunning views and magnificent scenery, featuring a delightful stretch along Friends Creek.  You can thank WGR personally for the fact that we added his favorite climb up Frosttown Road to the route a few years ago!  The second half of the ride is generally rolling--and still very scenic.  You never know WHAT you might see on Bollinger Road, so keep your eyes and ears open!  The route joins the northern perimeter of Frederick County about 23 miles into the ride, near Myersville, and follows the perimeter (with a few slight deviations made for aesthetic purposes) for the next 55-60 miles, to the quaint village of Detour.  Then it cuts back through the center of the county to return to Frederick.  101 miles, with several short options.  Estimated elevation gain 8000 feet.  Note that over 5,000 feet of the total climbing will take place in the first 50 miles.

Directions to the ride start:

MONOCACY MIDDLE SCHOOL, FREDERICK, MARYLAND, 8009 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick MD  21702

From D.C. Beltway (I-495), take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.  Continue north on US15 3.7 miles.  Take Exit 16, Motter Ave exit (sign for Frederick Community College).  Turn RIGHT at the traffic light onto Opossumtown Pike.  In about 1.5 mi. turn RIGHT into Monocacy Middle School parking lot (just after Frederick Community College on the left).

"ROLLY ATKINSON MEMORIAL CENTURY," starting from Monocacy Middle School, Frederick, Maryland.  *MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.*  William Shakespeare Smith designed this scenic and yet fairly mellow ride for the Frederick Pedalers last fall, and it includes lots of lovely notes like the Mid Atlantic Soaring Center, the fruit orchards of Adams County, Pennsylvania, the pretty campus of Mount Saint Mary's College, and our favorite Adams County pizza joint, Mamma's in Biglerville.  104 miles, with short options of 64 or 87 miles.

SUNDAY, APRIL 4, 2010

"SIVANOVA CENTURY," starting from Municipal Parking Lot A in Warrenton, Virginia.  **MEETING TIME 8:30 am!!**   Please note later-than-usual meeting time.   Although the first 25 miles are moderately hilly, the remainder of the ride features gentle terrain.  We'll ride south to Brandy Station in the morning (but definitely not as the crow flies) and on to Batna.  A major highlight will be lunch at Pelham's Pub at the Inn at Kelly's Ford, and if the weather is as nice as expected, we can eat outside on the patio.   For a sneak peak at the menu, see http://www.innatkellysford.com/dining.asp and scroll down to the Pelham's Lunch Pub Menu.  For the Civil War historians among you, we'll be visiting Kelly's Ford after lunch, and your homework assignment is to read all about the battle at http://www.nps.gov/frsp/kelly.htm and all about the "Gallant" John Pelham at http://www.civilwarhome.com/pelhambio.htm.  And, while you're at it, read about the Battle of Brandy Station at http://americancivilwar.com/brandy_station.html.   After lunch we head over to Bristersburg and return to Warrenton via Neavils Mill and Casanova, finally returning to Warrenton by way of the Warrenton Branch Greenway Rail Trail (no climb and no traffic!!).  101 miles, with plenty of shorter options, including a possible 29-mile shortcut after lunch.  Total elevation gain somewhere between 4000 and 4500 feet.

Directions to the ride start:

From DC Beltway, take I-66 west 21 miles to Exit 43A (Gainesville/Warrenton).  South on US29 for 11.5 miles where road forks near Warrenton.  Stay in left two lanes marked "Culpeper/Fredericksburg" and go under the overpass.  Continue south 1.1 mi. and take exit for VA643 Meetze Road.  Right on Meetze, which becomes Lee St. after the SS @ top of hill.  Continue on Lee St. 0.8 mi. into Old Town Warrenton.  Just past Fauquier County Court House, turn left into the Municipal Lot A.

ONE MORE THING :-)

Dear Friends,

WEEKEND RIDES, MARCH 29 & 30, 2010

Dear Friends,

Saturday is the DC Randonneurs Urbana ACP Brevet, and it's an extremely scenic and challenging route.  We'll follow up on Saturday with a fairly mellow ride in southern Maryland.

SATURDAY, MARCH 27, 2010
DC RANDONNEURS URBANA ACP 200K BREVET,
starting promptly at 7:00 a.m. from the Waffle House in Urbana, Maryland.  Here is ride designer and organizer Lynn Kristianson's tantalizing ride description:

The Urbana 200k reverses direction this year, but quite likely will retain the same degree of difficulty and feet of climbing,  if in a different order.

The brevet begins at the Urbana Waffle House (8906 Fingerboard Rd, Frederick, MD 21704). Checkin starts at 6am and the brevet starts at 7am. Get there early and have a hearty breakfast to carry you through the day! From Urbana, the route slides down to the Monocacy and across the valley to the first significant ridge of the Marlu appellation.  After the fast descent to Jefferson, there are several creek crossings with the attendant downs and ups and then a fairly easy grade over South Mountain at Gapland.

Several hard rollers involving Antietam Creek and tributaries bring the riders to Sharpsburg and a short tour of Antietam Battlefield.  The terrain moderates after this with a gradual rise out to Williamsport for a control at the KOA on the beautiful Conococheague Creek.  The route then heads north and loops around Hagerstown on mostly rural roads to a control in State Line PA.

A long slow downhill into Leitersburg passes through dairy farms and across mill creeks until some very hard rollers appear outside of Smithsburg.  Then there is the long arduous climb over South Mountain and Catoctin Ridge with a several false summits to keep things interesting.  The Frederick county line commences the long descent through Catoctin State Park into Thurmont.

The route does a long flat haul eastward on MD 77 and turns south for a control at the 7-11 in Union Bridge.   It will be a welcome break to prepare for the various hills - long and slow and short and steep -  from Libertytown to Bartonsville Road.  Cresting the last interminable uphill on Bartonsville, there is a brief pause to catch the view before a very long downhill along Reichs Ford Road.  One last uphill on Ijamsville brings the riders back to Fingerboard and the final miles to the finish at J & P Pizza.

For more juicy details, visit the DC Randonneurs website, www.dcrand.org

SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2010
"ST. LEONARD CENTURY,"
starting from Southern High School in Harwood, Maryland.  Please note MEETING TIME is 7:45 a.m. (15 minutes later than our usual).  A pleasant jaunt in southern Maryland, visiting scenic Lower Marlboro, the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, Chesapeake Beach, and the ever-lovely Fairhaven.  Lunch in St. Leonard.  101 miles, with 57-mile and 77-mile short options.

Here are the directions to the ride start:

SOUTHERN HIGH SCHOOL, 4400 SOLOMONS ISLAND ROAD, HARWOOD, MARYLAND

From DC Beltway, go East on US50.

In about 11 miles, take exit 16 and go south on MD424 Davidsonville Rd.

In about 3 miles, go right on MD2 @T.

In about 2 miles, right into high school parking lot.

Please park in the large main parking lot, NOT in the small faculty lot.

Note:  there are restrooms at the Citgo just south of the school at the intersection of MD2 and Harwood Rd.

Game Plan for Sunday's Ride

Hi again, Friends,

We've got a route for tomorrow, designed to get in some good hill work (which we need if we're going to be ready for next weekend's Dart) and to avoid low-lying areas and creek crossings as much as possible.  It's a 60-mille out-and-back ride to the outskirts of Smithsburg for lunch at Rocky's Pizza on Rt. 64.  The majority of the climbing (and descending) will be on US40, which has a good shoulder, low traffic, and moderate grades (so as to avoid losing traction on the climbs if it's really wet).   Even though it's only 60 miles, we should get close to 5,000 feet of climbing in, so it's actually a decent workout.  I'm typing up the cue sheet now, so shoot me an email if you want me to send you an electronic copy.

MEETING TIME 10:00 a.m.,  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!!!!.  Here are the directions to the ride start:

WEIS MARKET, THOMAS JOHNSON DRIVE & OPOSSUMTOWN PIKE, FREDERICK, MD

From D.C. Beltway (I-495), take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.  Continue north on US15 3.7 miles.  Take Exit 16, Motter Ave exit (sign for Frederick Community College).  Turn RIGHT at the traffic light onto Opossumtown Pike.  In a quarter mile turn right onto Thomas Johnson Drive, then left into the shopping center.  Park at the very back of the lot behind Weis Market.

Impromptu Sunday Ride

Dear Friends,

We're planning to ride tomorrow, but it's going to be sort of an impromptu event, starting at 10:00 from the Weis Market parking lot on Opossumtown Pike (at Thomas Johnson Drive).  If you're interested in joining us please contact me and, if I get around to generating a cue sheet I'll be happy to send you an electronic copy.  If I don't we'll wing it.  Distance will depend on how we feel and how wet it is, but it will definitely be less than a century.

Sunday Ride, March 14, 2010?

Dear Friends,

Well, tomorrow's forecast is pretty dismal, but we're hopeful that Sunday won't be a total washout.  I'll send out a notice on Saturday indicating what ride we'll be doing on Sunday -- trying to pick an area that isn't prone to flooding, if that's possible.  If anyone has any suggestions, please contact me off-list!

WEEKEND RIDES ARE BACK, MARCH 6 AND 7, 2010!!
